In its effort to build awareness of an inclusive culture across all its preschool brands, Crestar Education Group recently held a combined Professional Development training day. This event brought together educators from its four preschool brands to engage with experts and deepen their understanding of inclusive practices.
More than 1,300 educators and staff from the Group, including ELFA Preschool, Kinderland Academy & Preschool, NurtureStars Preschool and Skool4Kidz, attended the day-long event organised by KLC International Institute (KLCII).
The mass training was held on 12 July 2024 at Singapore Expo, with the theme “Strengthening Educators’ Efficacy in the New Landscape”. It featured two professors from Taiwan who are experts in special education conducting two key workshops on behavioural challenges and inclusion in the classroom.
Professor Meng Ying-Ru (PhD in Special Education, University of Pittsburgh, USA), is a lecturer at the Department of Special Education at the National Hsinchu University of Education and Associate Professor Tseng Shu-Hsien (PhD Special Education, University of Maryland, USA) is from Chung Yuan Christian University in Taiwan. They shared their knowledge in academic theories and evidence-based practices that enhance inclusiveness. They also introduced effective teaching strategies for the inclusive classroom to address behavioural challenges and foster children’s potential.
Dr Chua Ying Hwee, CEO & Principal of KLCII, took the opportunity to launch “Every Child, Every Teacher”—a ground up initiative to help every teacher be able to better respond effectively to the varied needs of every child within a classroom. Through this initiative, KLCII will not only equip teachers with practical skills and strategies for managing inclusive classrooms and developing the children under their care to flourish and reach their fullest potential. KLCII will also endeavour to support the mental and emotional well-being of preschool teachers through offering counselling services to teachers in need.
In another key workshop, Ms. Heidi Chong, Skool4Kidz’s Head of Early Intervention, led experiential activities designed to highlight the challenges faced by children needing early intervention. These activities allowed attendees to directly experience the everyday difficulties these children encounter, thereby equipping them with the confidence to effectively implement supportive strategies.
Additionally, a session facilitated by a team of KLCII lecturers provided educators with practical guidance on effectively incorporating the ECDA Code of Ethics into their work.
The full-day training programme also included workshops on workplace health and safety, security and incident response, as well as nutrition and food hygiene for operation staff. They were designed to upskill the staff to be more relevant in the ever-evolving preschool landscape.
