Singapore’s Direction Is Clear — Is Your Business Ready?
In his Budget 2026 address, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong was direct: “Harnessed well, AI will be a strategic advantage for Singapore. It can help us overcome our structural constraints — our limited natural resources, rapidly ageing population and tight labour market.” He also committed that Singapore would not see jobless growth as AI reshapes the economy — the goal is good jobs and higher wages, with workers growing alongside the technology rather than being left behind.
The message for enterprises is equally clear. AI adoption and job redesign are essential, not optional. They are how Singapore businesses stay competitive and how their people stay relevant. The government has backed this direction with substantial investment, including enhanced grants and a coordinated push across Workforce Singapore (WSG), SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG), and EnterpriseSG to help companies act.
KLCII Reimagineers’ Kopi Session on 9 June was designed with this in mind — a practical conversation for business owners ready to ask: what does this mean for my organisation, and where do I start?
An Afternoon Worth Showing Up For
On 9 June 2026, business leaders gathered at the KLCII Ang Mo Kio Campus for a Kopi Session and Networking event. The format was deliberate: kopi, real stories, and the kind of frank exchange that only happens when SMEs talk to other SMEs — about what workforce transformation looks like on the ground, and how Singapore’s enhanced grant landscape is making it more accessible than ever.
Opening the session, Dr Chua Ying Hwee, CEO and Principal of KLC International Institute (KLCII), reflected on KLCII’s own evolution. Founded as an educational institute in 1988, KLCII has continued to adapt as the workforce and business landscape changed. Today, that journey has taken us into workforce transformation, with KLCII Reimagineers appointed as one of the first 12 pre-approved consultants under the SkillsFuture Workforce Development Grant (Job Redesign+) [WDG(JR+)].
The lesson: transformation isn’t a one-off project. It’s the ongoing work of rethinking how an organisation creates value as the world around it changes.
SMEs for SMEs. Partners in Your Change Journey.
At KLCII Reimagineers, transformation isn’t just something we advise on — we’ve lived it ourselves as an SME. Growth and reinvention are rarely neat or one-size-fits-all, and they’re usually messier than a strategy slide suggests. Two guest speakers brought this reality to life, sharing candid accounts of their own change journeys — and how working with a partner familiar with the realities of SME transformation helped translate the need for change into practical action.

Left: Nathanael Wee, CEO of Red Dot Penguins Swim School; Right: Steve Lai, Director of Asam Tree Pte Ltd
Nathanael Wee, CEO of Red Dot Penguins Swim School, shared how growth brought a new challenge — scaling coach-parent engagement and coach development without increasing operational strain. Drawing on its early childhood expertise, KLCII Reimagineers helped embed child development milestones into coaching practices and refine key customer touchpoints, including the onboarding experience for new families.
What left the strongest impression on Nathanael was not a methodology or framework, but the way the engagement began. As he shared, “What struck me was that they didn’t come in with a solution — they listened first.” That approach helped keep the work practical, with recommendations shaped around the business’s actual challenges, operating realities and priorities.
Steve Lai, Director of Asam Tree Pte Ltd, shared a different growth question: how could a single F&B outlet diversify its revenue and reach new customers? The business expanded into multi-channel catering through Oddle, CaterSpot and FoodLink, with KLCII Reimagineers working alongside the team to build the digital capabilities needed to support this expansion. This included strengthening platform operations, improving discoverability through SEO, and sharpening brand presentation.
Both stories point to the same challenge: growth changes the nature of the work. AI is accelerating that shift, and businesses now have to ask not just how they grow, but how work needs to evolve alongside them.
Panel Discussion: The Real Conversation About AI and Work
For the panel, the real question wasn’t whether AI could do the work. It was this: how do we redesign work so that people and AI can work together effectively? Three ideas anchored the discussion.
- Start with the work, not the tool. Inside the KLCII Reimagineers team, AI has become a working partner across projects – researcher, writer, data analyst, coder. This did not begin with a formal AI strategy. It began by mapping what they actually do – where time goes, where friction lives. When organisations understand their operations clearly, the AI opportunities become visible, and the right application follows from there.
- Not everyone in an organisation adopts AI at the same pace — and that is fine. What matters is a clear direction, a culture safe enough to experiment in, and early wins that others can observe and believe in. When people experience what AI can do for their own work, confidence grows, adoption follows naturally, and transformation becomes sustainable rather than imposed.
- 无聊、无能、无力 — no meaning, no ability, no energy. These are the three things no employee wants to feel at work, and the three risks that poorly managed AI adoption creates. The starting point, then, is not the technology — it is the people. Which aspects of work are becoming less meaningful? Where are capability gaps creating friction? Which tasks are draining time and energy without adding proportional value? These are the pressure points where well-managed AI adoption can deliver the most immediate and sustainable value.
Where Transformation Begins
A question from the audience reflected a challenge many business owners face: how do you begin when you can see the value of AI, but simply aren’t ready to take the first step?
The panel’s advice was to start with curiosity rather than certainty. AI is evolving at a pace where no amount of reading can replace practical exposure. Speaking with those already applying it, and trying it firsthand can build more confidence than waiting for the “perfect” plan.
The good news is that the support to make this transformation happen has never been greater.
More Support Than Ever: The Enhanced WDG(JR+) Grant
The session shed light on a significant upgrade in available grant support. The SkillsFuture Workforce Development Grant (Job Redesign+) [WDG(JR+)] replaces the PSG-JR scheme with a meaningfully larger envelope: up to 70% funding, capped at S$150,000 per enterprise, across three components — Workforce Consultancy, Capability Building, and Workforce Tech Solutions.
| Component | What It Covers | Cap |
|---|---|---|
| Workforce Consultancy | AI readiness assessment, workforce strategy, job redesign, implementation plan | S$50,000 |
| Capability Building | HR and line management capability for sustained job redesign and organisational change | S$60,000 |
| Workforce Tech Solutions | Workforce analytics, skills gap tools, AI-powered HR technology (must be bundled with Consultancy or Capability Building) | S$90,000 |
The grant operates on a nett fee model — your organisation pays only the co-funded portion directly to the consultant. With the current S$10,000 SkillsFuture Enterprise Credit (SFEC) available until November 2026, enterprises may combine SFEC with WDG(JR+) grant to maximise funding support before the credit transitions to the redesigned scheme in late 2026.
How KLCII Reimagineers Can Help
KLCII Reimagineers is a WSG pre-approved consultant under WDG(JR+) grant. The approach is hands-on and human-centric: starting with a diagnostic of your business context, identifying where AI and job redesign create meaningful impact, and working alongside leadership and employees through implementation — not just delivering a report and stepping away.
Ready to Take the Next Step?
If your organisation is thinking about AI adoption, job redesign, or building the internal capability to manage change sustainably, begin with a complimentary sense-making session — a diagnostic conversation to understand your operating context and explore what workforce transformation could realistically look like for you.
