KLC International Institute was privileged to welcome internationally acclaimed neuroscientist Professor Adele Diamond to Singapore, where she delivered a powerful keynote address at our recent “Bridging Worlds in Early Childhood Development” conference. Beyond the conference, Professor Diamond led an exclusive Masterclass Series at our Ang Mo Kio campus from July 28 to August 2, 2025, offering educators and caregivers a unique opportunity to engage with her research and practical strategies for nurturing children’s executive functions.

These four masterclasses were designed to deepen participants’ understanding of how to holistically support a child’s development — emotionally, socially, and cognitively. Each session was anchored in scientific insight and tailored for real-world application in Singapore’s context for educators and caregivers alike.

Session Highlights

Session 1: Executive Functions and Social-Emotional Development

Date: July 28, 2025

The opening session explored the bi-directional relationship between executive functions and social-emotional well-being. Participants gained insights into why fostering emotional health is essential for optimal learning and cognitive development, and learned strategies to support children in both areas simultaneously.

Key Takeaways:

  • Social and emotional well-being directly influence executive function and academic outcomes.
  • Executive functions enhance interpersonal skills, self-regulation, and resilience.
  • Creating nurturing environments boosts both cognitive and emotional growth.

Session 2: Understanding and Supporting Children with ADHD

Date: July 29, 2025

Professor Diamond guided participants through an in-depth look at ADHD, particularly the inattentive subtype, which is often overlooked or misdiagnosed. She addressed the executive function challenges associated with ADHD and shared approaches for recognizing and supporting affected students.

Key Takeaways:

  • ADHD-inattentive has distinct executive function characteristics that require nuanced understanding.
  • Stress can cause children to manifest behaviours that resemble ADHD — context matters.
  • Behaviour should be viewed through the lens of brain development, not merely discipline.

Session 3: Enhancing Executive Functions through Movement

Date: July 30, 2025

This session focused on the strong link between motor development and cognitive functioning. Professor Diamond shared how activities such as dance, play, arts and crafts, and nature exploration can significantly support executive function growth in children.

Key Takeaways:

  • Movement and play are vital tools in cognitive and emotional development.
  • Physical activities enhance working memory, cognitive flexibility, and self-control.
  • Incorporating play into learning environments yields holistic benefits.

Session 4: Strengthening Executive Functions in Caregivers

Date: August 2, 2025

The final session turned the spotlight onto teachers and caregivers themselves. Professor Diamond emphasised that the executive functions of educators and parents have a direct impact on children’s developmental outcomes. Attendees learned self-care practices to enhance their own cognitive control, stress reduction, and attentional skills.

Key Takeaways:

  • Adult executive functions shape the caregiving environment and child outcomes.
  • Stress reduction and emotional regulation are essential for effective caregiving.
  • Daily mindfulness and structured routines support caregiver well-being.
