This programme is targeted for Early Childhood Educators and Leaders (Child care centre Supervisors, Kindergarten Principals, Senior/ Head Teachers, Assistant Supervisors and Child Care/ Kindergarten Operators)

Study Tour Objectives

Upon completion of this Study Trip, participants will:
• Deepen their knowledge of curriculum development for young children.
• Experience various curriculum design principles within specific content areas
• Acquire the skills in formulating strategic pedagogical plans in developing programmes for young children in Singapore

Study Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Monday, 26 June 2017
Singapore – Boston (Meals on Board)
Arrival at Boston Logan Airport:
Meet at Airport by Boston Common Coach and escorted to Wheelock Residential Hall
Welcome Brief and Neighbourhood Tour
Day 2: Tuesday, 27 June 2017
Morning Breakfast (8am – 9am)
Orientation:
Brief on Study Tour goals, activities and expectations Tour of campus, including Wheelock College Library and new Earl Center for Learning and Innovation, which houses an extensive Resource Centre.
Afternoon Lunch at Wheelock College
Workshop 1: Early Childhood Curriculum Development
This session will provide the opportunity for participants to deepen their knowledge of curriculum development for young children.Issues of curriculum design and assessment will be introduced as interrelated processes that include structuring learning environments and experiences that are responsive to children’s interests and abilities through play and exploration.
Strategies for developing learning opportunities that are appropriate for all students will be explored.

Day 3: Wednesday, 28 June 2017

Focus on Reggio Emilia-centered practices at Peabody Terrace Children’s Centre and/or Newtowne School

Workshop 2: Cutting Edge Early Childhood Theory and Pedagogy : Learning to see Children, their Social Worlds, and How They LearnThis session will explore the idea of pedagogical documentation from the municipal preschools of Reggio Emilia, Italy as a way to better understand and communicate children’s social and emotional development and learning. Includes a hands-on experience with documentation in the Wheelock Documentation Studio.

Day 4: Thursday, 29 June 2017

Centre Visit 2: Eliot Pearson Children’s School at Turfs University

Workshop 3: Wheelock Family Theatre : Drama in Education – Drama as a Learning Medium in the Classroom by Wendy LementThis session is designed to help teachers create dramatic structures which not only challenge young children with co-operative problem solving, but also build confidence and encourage reflection.

Teachers and administrators receive a demonstration of drama methods. Participants work in groups to adapt these techniques to their curricular needs.

Each group formulates an educational goal, and then devises a structure to meet that goal. This practical workshop gives teachers an opportunity to try out their structure on the rest of the workshop participants.

The session will end with an evaluation of each structure and suggestions for centre-wide and classroom implementation.

Day 5: Friday, 30 June 2017

Workshop 4: Science for Young ChildrenTo deepen their understanding of inquiry-based science teaching and learning, participants will :
• Engage in hands-on investigations of physical and life science concepts
• Examine classroom video and children’s work
• Explore the role of questioning, discussion and documentation in deepening children’s science experiences in the context of early childhood classrooms.We will also discuss opportunities for integrating science with other areas of the curriculum including literacy, math and the arts.

Visit the Museum of Science to explore hands-on science exhibits, and the pre-school focused Discovery Centre

Day 6: Saturday, 1 July 2017
