The WSQ Advanced Certificate in Early Years (Pre-Requisite Modules) course is designed to ensure participants meet the school’s requirements and assessments as pre-requisites for admission to the WSQ Advanced Certificate in Early Years (WSQ ACEY) course. The pre-requisite modules are designed to prepare participants to acquire knowledge on infant and toddler development and observation skills.

The course aims to enable students to:

  • Develop understanding of the needs and development phases of infants and toddlers (2 to 36 months old);
  • Acquire knowledge and skills in observing, recording, interpreting and documenting children’s development and learning.

CHILD DEVELOPMENT (45hrs)

Identify how Children (Birth to Age 3) Learn and Develop

At the end of the module, participants should have:

The ability to understand:

  • Developmental theories
  • Different areas of children’s growth and development
  • Expected milestones (developmental stages) across different aspects of children’s growth and development
  • Strengths-based views on the differences between typical and atypical development and learning (birth to age 3)
  • The relevant Curriculum Frameworks utilised in Singapore
  • Factors that contribute to children’s growth, well-being, learning and development

The ability to:

  • Apply understanding of developmental stages of children from birth to age 3 to guide care-giving practice
  • Apply understanding of contemporary theories and literature to support the growth, well-being, learning and development of each child

CURRICULUM AND PEDAGOGY (35 hrs)

Assist in Observation and Documentation of Children’s Learning

At the end of the module, participants should have:

The ability to understand:

• Theories and expected milestones (developmental stages) across different areas of children’s growth and development
• The importance of observing and documenting children’s learning
• Types of observation techniques
• Types of documentation
• How to analyse and interpret observations and documentations of children’s learning
• Importance of maintaining the confidentiality of young children and their families

The ability to:

• Apply knowledge of observations and documentations of children’s learning and development to guide care-giving practice
• Conduct observations and documentations of children’s learning using appropriate techniques
• Gain an in-depth understanding of each child

Applicants should have:

  • Completed Relief Staff Programme (RSP) / Fundamentals Certificate in Early Childhood Care and Education (FECCE) / WSQ Higher Certificate in Infant Care (HCIC) / Certificate in Infant Toddler Care and Development (CITC)
  • ECDA PDP(E) appointee certificate (only for PDPE applicants)

Full-time Course: 2 Months
Part-Time Course: 3 Months

Award of Certificate

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be awarded with WSQ Statements of Attainment (SOA).

A range of individual and group projects, quizzes, presentations, role-plays and practicum.

Note: Some projects will include practical tasks such as observation of children and implementing activities in Early Childhood classroom settings.
