The Pearson BTEC Level 5 Higher National Diploma in Business is awarded by Pearson, the UK’s largest awarding body offering academic and vocational qualifications that are globally recognised and benchmarked. This programme comprises of 16 modules delivered over 15 months full-time basis with a total of 960 learning hours. Students are required to obtain a minimum of 240 credits where at least 125 credits must be achieved at a level 5 unit.

Overall, students need to complete eight (8) compulsory core units and eight (8) specialist units.

1 Business Environment This unit will help students develop an understanding of the different types of organisation, the influence of stakeholders and the relationship between busineses and the local, national and gobal environments.
2 Managing Financial Resources and Decisions This unit provides students an understanding of the various sources of finance available for a business and the skills to use financial information for financial planning and decision making.
3 Organisations and Behaviour The aim of this unit is to give students an understanding of individual and group behaviour in organisations and to examine current theories and their
application in managing behaviour in the workplace.
4 Marketing Principles This unit aims to provide students with knowledge and skills relating to the
fundamental concepts and principles that underpin the marketing process.
5 Aspects of Contract and Negligence for Business The aim of this unit is to provide students with an understanding of aspects of the law of contract and tort and the skills to apply them, particularly in business situations.
6 Business Decision Making Through this unit, students will develop the skills and techniques for data gathering and storage. They will be able to use the tools available to create and present useful information for making business decisions.
7 Business Strategy The aim of this unit is to provide students the knowledge and understanding of the different kinds of strategy which could be used in an operational, tactical or strategic role for an organisation.
8 Research Project This unit will develop students’ skills of independent enquiry and critical analysis by undertaking a sustained research investigation topic that is student-chosen but tutor-approved.
9 Personal and Professional Development This unit is designed to help students become an effective and confident self-directed employee. This helps students to become more confident in managing own personal and professional skills to achieve personal and career goals.
10 Working with and Leading People In this unit, students will develop the skills and knowledge needed for working with and leading others, through understanding the importance of recruiting the right people for the jobs. They will also appreciate that developing knowledge and skills to achieve high performance is a cross-organisation activity.
11 Managing Business Activities to Achieve Results This unit aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills to manage their activities in the business workplace to improve their effectiveness and efficiency.
12 Managing Communications, Knowledge and Information The aim of this unit is to show how communications, knowledge and information can be improved within an organisation including making better use of IT systems to facilitate the storage and dissemination of information and knowledge to make informed decisions.
13 Advertising and Promotion in Business The aim of this unit is to provide students with the understanding and skills for using advertising, promotion and marketing communications effectively. Students will put this into practice by planning an integrated promotional strategy.
14 Marketing Planning The aim of this unit is to provide students with the knowledge and skills to develop marketing plans that meet marketing objectives, and meet the needs of the target market.
15 Small Business Enterprise The aim of this unit is to provide students the opportunity to focus on the
processes involved, through change management, of reviewing and improving the performance of a small business enterprise.
16 Management Accounting The aim of this unit is to provide students with an understanding and ability to use cost and budgeted information to support the management decision
process within an organisation.

Assessment

A range of written assignments, class presentations and project works. No examinations required.

Award of Certificate

Rules of Combination:
1. Qualification credit value: a minimum of 240 credits. (A maximum of 30 credits may be at Level 6.)
2. Minimum credit to be achieved at the level of the qualification (level 5) or above: 125 credits.
3. Mandatory core unit: 125 credits
4. Specialist unit credit: 115 credits

Upon successful completion of all 16 modules in the course, students will receive the Pearson BTEC Level 5 HND Diploma in Business (QCF) certification awarded by Pearson Education.

Students can also choose to progress on to do their Bachelor Degree programme (top-up) at more than 170 universities listed on the Pearson Degree Course Finder website.

For New Entrants

  • Minimum 18 years old and above
  • BTEC Level 3 qualification in Business/related level 3 qualifications OR
  • GCE ‘A’ Level with a credit in English or IELTS 5.5 or its equivalent

For Mature Candidates

  • Aged 21 years old and above
  • At least 2 years of relevant working experience, AND
  • 3 passes in the GEC ‘O’ Level with a credit in English or IELTS 5.5 or its equivalent OR

5 passes in GCE ‘N’ Level with a credit in English or IELTS 5.5 or its equivalent.5)
