This course provides an overview of safety, health, hygiene and nutritional standards. Emphasis is on the safety and health routines, hygiene, nutrition, and food preparation, storage, feeding and dressing procedures. In addition, common illnesses affecting young children and preventive measures for handling epidemic outbreaks will be covered. Safety practices and preventive measures for indoor and outdoor activities will be discussed. Participants will also be taught injury prevention for young children and how to recognise and report suspected child abuse.

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand and apply care-giving practices to provide a safe and healthy physical environment for children in preschools based on Heath, Safety, Nutritional and Hygiene Standards in Singapore
  • Identify the signs and symptoms of common ailments in young children
  • Recognise the importance of maintaining personal hygiene and health practices and also effective infection control practices to prevent infectious outbreaks
  • Understand basic nutritional needs of children and identify common food allergies
  • Learn how to administer first aid and respond to accidents and emergencies
